Introducing

SUPERVISION 101

A practical 12-month program to develop the leadership capacity of new generation supervisors and managers. The program will combine conventional training with individual coaching, assessments and self-directed learning.

Improve managerial effectiveness by

  • Benchmarking participants against their peers;
  • Identifying strengths and opportunities in ares or core competencies;
  • Creating customized learning plans for each supervisor;
  • Have participants take ownership for change:
  • Accessing mentoring assistance one-on-one;
  • Delivering customized workshops to deal with primary skills requirements;
  • Creating learning teams that will meet together regularly to learn new skills that can be implemented between sessions;
  • Measuring post-training benefits.

BACKGROUND

Organizations need to run leaner and meaner than ever before.  As a consequence they are calling on managers to be cross - trained in functional areas beyond their original area of specialization.  The new breed of manager must not only be able to lead and motivate, but needs the flexibility to interact in virtually all facets of the business.  Managers also have to demonstrate their flexibility by being able to reconcile the sometimes clashing needs of their team members with those of senior management. 

This can be particularly difficult if some of the members of the team are former friends and peers.

This program will cover all the basic skills needed to improve performance. Putting the skills into practice will enable participants to accrue respect and confidence from the boss, peers and staff.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Managers with 5 years or less of management experience.


TRAINING PROCESS

The training will be customized based on the needs of the individual participants.  After conducting a needs analysis, using a reliable and valid diagnostic instrument, each person will be provided with 3 methods of learning. The first will an opportunity to deal with specific issues with a highly skilled mentor, one-on-one.  The second intervention will be a facilitator – led workshop covering some basis topics that the participants and leadership team deem critical to the success of the organization.  Finally, the participants will be divided into learning teams of 6-10, and challenged to create their own learning curriculum, teaching each other one skill at a time, over a period of up to a year.

The “classroom” portion of the training will incorporate state-of-the-art adult education techniques, including role-plays and simulations that will be as close to real life as possible. Participants will learn by listening, seeing and above all, using hands-on practice. They will also gain from ongoing feedback from their peers and the facilitator. Participants will benefit from an informal, enjoyable learning environment, which will encourage active participation and openness.

They will be challenged to use the skills right away.

 LENGTH OF PROGRAM

Spread over 12 months.


IMPLEMENTATION STEPS

Stage 1: Diagnosis of strengths and weaknesses of each participant, using the MEPS 360 degree analysis.

Stage 2: Feedback of the survey results to all participants. Feedback will include strengths, weaknesses and comparison to a group of peers. They will be show to use the 200 report to build and take ownership for their own development.

Stage 3: Feedback and analysis with an outside consultant/mentor.

Stage 4: In-house workshop covering key subject areas as identified by the MEPS, senior management, the participants and the consultants.

Stage 5: Ongoing training in additional topic and skill areas, using the Peer Mentoring learning system.

Stage 6: Re-measurement of all participants to see whether there have been real measurable improvements in skills and behavior

 

DELIVERABLES

Each participant will receive:

  • A customized workbook with relevant case studies and role-plays.
  • MEPS* Professional Development Report.
  • A copy of The Instant Manager.
  • A one-hour individualized mentoring session with our consultant and ongoing help by phone or e-mail, as needed.

Each learning team will receive a Lesson Plans resource guide containing the process and tools to learn nearly 100 topics together.

* The MEPS instrument will measure each person on  critical skills as Teamwork, Leadership, Problem Solving, Decision Making, Handling Stress, Communications and Feedback and Planning.
